Annual Firewise Community Meeting

May is National Wildfire Prevention Month. Since we are a National Firewise Community, the Brighton Institute and Big Cottonwood Canyon Association (BCCA) sponsor an annual Community Firewise Meeting to go over details about how to reduce wildfire risk.
Bring your questions about the new State Wildfire Maintenance Mandate and listen for updates about fees, home assessments, and resources for complying with the new mandate from our panel of experts. Panel members include Mike Swinsick and Justin Roach from Utah Forests Fire and State Lands Agency, UFA Chief Craig Ellingson, and USFS District Ranger Adam Shaw. The Forest Service will also share their plans for Big Cottonwood Canyon during the upcoming wildfire season.

Cottonwood Canyons Foundationβs (CCF) Plant Stewardship Director, Ella Abelli-Amen, will discuss the best strategies to manage noxious weeds around our mountain homes and within our community.
About Ella
Originally from Petaluma, California, Ella spent six years studying plant ecology at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Her experience ranges from greenhouse management and alpine plant surveys to teaching botany labs for undergraduates while her research focused on plant and animal interaction ecology and GIS. Now, she collaborates with community partners to manage invasive plants, restore native species through planting and monitoring of rare plants, and engages with the community through education and stewardship to build ecological resilience across the Tri-canyons.*

Beaver Dam Analog Maintenance

Directions:
We will be meeting at the Willow Heights Trailhead at 9:45 a.m. To reach the Willow Heights Trailhead, drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon Road (SR-190) for approximately 12 miles. Look for roadside parking on the north (left) side of the road, located 0.4 miles past Silver Fork Lodge. The trailhead is marked by an engraved granite boulder.
Event Description:
This project is located at an approximate elevation of 8,500 feet. Volunteers should be prepared to hike up to one mile on uneven terrain while carrying light tools and then spend the day outdoors completing maintenance on already-completed BDA structures. Please dress in layers and bring plenty of water.
Important Notes:
There are no restrooms on site so please plan accordingly.
Weather conditions may cause the project to be canceled or rescheduled.

Refillable water bottle
Sunscreen
Sunglasses or safety glasses
Long pants (jeans or heavy material), long-sleeved shirts, and a hat are strongly recommended
Work gloves (we will have some if you do not)

Beaver Dam Analog Build

Event Description:
Volunteers will help complete BDA structures where posts have already been installed. The work involves weaving natural materials within and against the posts to create structures in the steam channel. Volunteers will hike tools to work sites (half-mile to lower BDAS and one mile to upper structures), learn BDA construction techniques, and help cut branches and gather rocks and soil. Weβll use on-site materials like dad and downed tree branches to create structures ready to capture spring runoff. This will be a βdry buildβ with spring maintenance planned once water returns, offering great learning conditions and hands-on watershed restoration experience.

We will provide extra word gloves, materials, and necessary tools to complete project work.

These marvelous creatures are more than just industrious dam-builders; they are vital to the health of our environment. The Annual Breakfast at the Milly is served from 8am-10:30 am. Breakfast is served by Brighton Ski Resort in the Milly Chalet at 8 AM - cost varies.
The Parade begins at 10:30 am and goes until three laps are completed. The first lap is the Grand Marshall lap. The second lap will include large and small vehicles and all bicyclists. The final lap will include the Candy Toss and any walkers who would like to join in. Candy may NOT be thrown from any vehicles or bikes.
The parade is FREE, so please come and enjoy!
Please note that the Brighton Loop will be closed for ALL traffic from 10:00 am until noon.

Jason brings substantial expertise to the field of astronomy education. As the head of the education department at Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, he oversees the statewide field trip, teacher development, elementary outreach, and summer camp programs. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics education and a professional educator license. Jason is pursuing a Masterβs degree in space studies specializing in the relationship between planetarium education and the national space system. His NASA experience includes managing a multi-institutional outreach effort for the punch mission, spending two weeks as an analogue astronaut at the Mars desert research station, and volunteering as a solar system ambassador. Jason is fueled by his love for space since birth and is dedicated to spreading the big-picture perspective of the cosmos.
