Todd Stout, Utah President of Lepidopterist Society, International Butterfly Breeder Association, and member of the University of Florida Research Association will be speaking to us about the habitats, life cycles, and identification of local butterflies!

The Brighton Institute is well-known for its block printing booth at the Wasatch Wildflower Festival and Brighton Days. Join local artist and art educator Carolyn Keigley for a one-day class to learn how to design and carve your own block for block printing. Create a block for your own holiday cards or express your creative whimsy for a unique piece of art!

Class size is limited to 16 people. Ages 18 and up. Registration is $3.00 to cover the cost of the block. Donations are encouraged to help pay for the carving tools, paper and ink.

Materials supplied by the Brighton Institute: soft linoleum block 4" x 6", tracing paper, carving tools, ink and printing tools (brayer, baren and paper)

Materials students need to bring to class: a drawing sketchbook of any size and photos of ideas for your print. These photos need to be no larger than 3 1/2" x 5 1/2". If in doubt, the teacher will help you in your selection or ideas.

The Brighton Institute is hosting a FREE self defense! If you were able to join us in May for part one that is fantastic! This class will pick up where we left off. If you missed it, that’s okay too. Please join us. We will do a refresher for everyone!!

Deborah Beall and her husband, a flight attendant and pilot respectively, trained in self defense following 9/11. Deborah worked in the training department and attended specialized training in Atlantic City provided by the Federal Air Marshall Program. She taught self defense to flight attendants and pilots for two different airlines. Her courses were eight hours long and provided the basics of stances, strikes, kicks, and blocks. While these skills in no way made flight attendants the “Chuck Norrises of the Airlines”, the skills did provide them with basic knowledge that had the potential to saves lives.

Deborah will be teaching us about the weapons we posses on our bodies, and the targets of the body, along with some basic maneuvers to provide a skill set for the protection of ourself and loved ones.

There are many ways to work with fungi, and they all begin with knowing how to grow and care for mushrooms. We'll learn how to inoculate and grow oyster mushrooms. We'll talk about tricks for being successful in our climate, and what you can do with this skillset once you have it.

Each registered attendee will leave with an oyster mushroom grow kit to take home. 

Class is limited to 15 students.

Taylor Litwin from the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation will suggest an itinerary for a wildflower seed safari to help find and preserve local wildflower seeds for the next season’s planting. She will also help us identify local invasive weeds and suggest ways to limit their growth.

Fungi are all around us playing important ecological roles to ensure the health of our forest ecosystems. We'll take a look at fungal biology, the jobs that fungi perform in our forests, and some common mushrooms that you might see in the Wasatch. Learning about fungi is a great way to broaden your understanding of nature and increase your appreciation for the mountains.

In the Pioneer era, there may have been as many as 500 beaver dams in the Cottonwood Canyons. Currently there are only three active dams. We will take a look at the benefits to ecology and wildfire mitigation that beaver dams offer and hear about ways to live in harmony with beavers. We will also hear about an exciting project to create more beaver-friendly features in hopes of attracting beavers to return to Willow Heights.

Brighton Beaver Action Plan - Nicole Smeeding

Nicole will review the results of a 2022 situation assessment for the Town of Brighton toward creating a "Beaver Action Plan."  Beavers are ecosystem engineers who are of critical importance to a healthy watershed. The action plan aims to reduce negative beaver-human interaction by providing support, planning, and education to Brighton residents to prioritize non-lethal alternatives to nuisance beavers and promote coexistence. 

Beaver Dam Analogs in Willow Heights - Lise Brunhart

Lise will provide a short history of the Beaver Dam Analogs project funded by the Central Wasatch Commission from 2020 through 2022. Willow Heights pond has been failing to hold water through drought and loss of the Beavers living there. It is hoped that by building beaver dam analogs in Willow Heights Creek, beavers may be attracted back to the area to restore their former dam and habitat. 

Join the Brighton Institute in welcoming Bill Barron of Salt Lake City. Learn how this former Alta Ski Patroller and carpenter was recast through his advocacy with the Citizens' Climate Lobby leading to the most important work in his life; normalizing the conversation around our changing climate and speaking for bipartisan climate solutions.

Bill's 13 years of advocacy has included 4 bike tours across Utah covering 3250 miles, 3 times as a single-issue climate candidate and most recently on a listening tour of the state. We will learn more about Bill's transformative experience, talk about how we are being impacted locally, and ways you can engage on this issue.

The Brighton Institute is hosting a Drawing Series this fall. Learn from local artist and art educator Carolyn Keigley. All levels are welcome - no experience is required.

It is not necessary to attend all classes - join us on any dates that work for you. Materials will be provided for those who do not have personal supplies. There are no fees for the classes, but the Brighton Institute welcomes donations in any amount to help cover the costs of supplies for this and other classes and activities.

The dates are as follows: 11/2, 11/9 & 12/1
